A Court of Thorns and Roses
Sarah J. Maas
by Jordan Stephanie Gray
Zephyra, a mermaid who has traded her tail for the precarious freedom of dry land, lives in constant fear in the merrow-loathing kingdom of Mortia. Her desperate attempt to escape a traumatic past ends abruptly when she is captured and sentenced to death by Arion Stone, a cold, lethal warlock who views her kind as nothing more than a blight to be purged. Arion possesses immense power, but it comes with a devastating price that only the heart of the God of Death can remedy—a relic hidden deep within the ocean’s perilous, uncharted trenches.
He offers Zephyra a grim bargain: guide him to the artifact, and he will grant her life. Forced into an uneasy alliance, the two embark on a journey that binds their souls through magic and necessity. As they navigate treacherous waters and the weight of their own secrets, the animosity between them begins to fray, replaced by a volatile, forbidden desire.
However, Zephyra’s past is closing in, and they are both hunted by an enemy far more dangerous than their mutual distrust. In a world where every tide hides a trap, they must learn to rely on each other or succumb to the wicked depths.
Cortney PaceA Slow Burning Tide That Pays Off
"The Wicked Sea is the kind of story that takes its time pulling you under—but once it does, it doesn’t let go. The beginning felt a bit slow, and it took me a little while to fully settle into the world and characters. However, that slower buildup ultimately works in its favor. As the story progresses, the tension deepens and the stakes become more compelling, making it hard to put down once things truly get moving. What stood out most was the balance between predictability and surprise. There were moments where I had a sense of where things might be heading, but the story still managed to deliver twists and turns that caught me off guard—especially toward the very end. That final stretch added an extra layer of intrigue that made the journey feel worthwhile. Overall, it’s a gripping read that rewards patience. If you’re willing to ease into it, you’ll find yourself fully immersed before you know it. ["

AnonymousIt was fine. Don't know that I will continue the series
"⭐️3.75 I found the plot interesting and the story well developed. Heads up, right out of the gate it was very violent. I enjoyed the magical elements, and the distinctions between the types of Mermaids, and the tiny peek we get into the surrounding Kingdoms. It seems that this is book one in a series so you are left with several questions at the end. The characters remind me of Crescent City characters in terms of dialouge, maturity, and general snarky-ness. One pet peeve- this book details the length and girth of the MMC and it was just ridiculous. While the story does give an explanation as to why he is the way he is, I rolled my eyes HARD. Like, no one wants a holiday summer sausage in any of their holes. Can we please be realistic?! ⚠️ Strong language throughout. Approximately 3 F words per page. 🌶 3.5 of 5- while there are only 2 intimate scenes, they are descriptive, play by play, with one scene lasting several pages. There are 2 or 3 uses of the c word for female genitalia. One scene is consensual rough intimacy. ⚠️ Memories of physical and psychological abuse. ⚠️ Violence and gore. ["

Tahmida AlamDecent read
"It had a decent story line! It read a lot like a YA book but there is strong Language and explicit and spicy scenes so this is an adult novel. I feel like the book dragged on a bit but over all a solid read. 3 out of 5 for reading. It did end on a cliffhanger so there will be a book 2. 🌶 for spice ["
