House of Earth and Blood: Crescent City, Book 1
Sarah J. Maas
by Kayla Edwards
The stakes reach a breaking point in the third installment of the House of Devils series. Darkslayer Darien Cassel faces his greatest challenge yet: the life of his human ward, Loren Calla, hangs in the balance. Desperate to wake her from a supernatural coma, Darien abandons his home to hunt for a legendary cure, leaving his best friend, Maximus Reacher, to navigate a treacherous path of unearthed family secrets that threaten to shatter everything he knows.
Meanwhile, in the historic streets of Yveswich, the tension between rival Darkslaying houses ignites. Roman Devlin of the House of Black finds himself at odds with Shay Cousens, a cunning Selkie pickpocket. Forced into an uneasy alliance to locate Shay’s missing sister, the two must set aside their mutual disdain to survive.
As their investigation pulls them toward the mysterious Phoenix Head Society and a mythical body of water capable of tearing their world asunder, the lines between enemy and ally blur. With loyalties fracturing and ancient legends resurfacing, the characters must confront whether their deepest desires are worth the destruction of their world. In this high-stakes urban fantasy, every promise carries a price and every secret holds the power to kill.
BrittanyThis series has me in a chokehold
"4.5 ⭐️ Another masterpiece by Kayla Edwards. Don’t let this big boy fool you, it may be long but it’s also action-packed. I have three points that I believe made this book excellent. First, I think one of my favorite parts of this book was the expansion of the world. Kayla is truly phenomenal at world building and I am always so impressed with how immersive her stories are. The plot is rich in details and the new settings and super fun to read about. This book brought an entire new flavor into an already very unique world, and I was majorly into it. Second, can we talk about how spoiled we are with all the new POVs??? Seriously, I am forever a side character girly and I am HERE FOR ALL THE POVs. You know those books that have some POVs that you truly want to skip over? Yeah, that is most certainly NOT this book. Each side character is well developed yet complicated, and they are so fun to read about. Three, it is an art to find a believable balance between humor and tragedy/fear in stories that are a bit dark like this, and I am always impressed wirh the balance these books are able to find. This story is raw and tear-jerking, and also has little silly parts that remind readers of the layers of life. I appreciate a good laugh in books, no matter how dark the story is. Not only was this book able to find those moments, but it has those certain characters where you just KNOW you are about to be in for a ride for the chapter. I know I said three main points but my honorable mention goes to our newest bookish Shadow Daddy - Roman. Read this book if you like: - an epic plot - urban fantasy - well developed and lovable side characters - steamy romance scenes - tattooed hotties - mental health representation - a bit of mystery - fur baby besties Thank you to Kayla Edwards for the ARC! Im already excited for what comes next. ["

Mrs. JonesFeels redundant
"I feel like we've already read this... like, the same type of characters. Same Daddy issues. Same battles. Same enemies. Just... slightly more mature and developed characters. Don't get me wrong, the characters are detailed, the world building is epic... but I feel like we just got a repeat of book 1. Similar battles, both internal and external. Similar patterns in the story. I pushed through to finish this, but I won't be continuing this series. Book 1 was phenomenal, this feels like she rewrote book one and gave it more depth and dimension. If I hadn't already felt like I'd read this, I'd have loved it. She's an excellent writer, it was just really predictable since I'd literally just read the first two books. ["

JordanMy Roman Empire!
"so I know I rave about this series any chance I get, but this one just became my favorite book in the series this far. Darien and Roman are fighting for my favorite book boyfriend spot right now and it’s about to become a why choose because I simply cannot pick just one😂 anywayyyy, this book was absolutely EVERYTHING. I had my heart pulled in so many directions and was gut punched on more than one occasion. I was hurting, laughing, pissed, all the above. The absolute torture that Darien ensured was so heartbreaking. My poor baby, I just wanted to hug him😭 and then Roman on the other hand was just 🥵. Overall, I absolutely loved the continuation of the story and how we transitioned into Yveswich from Angelthene but still maintained settings from both was so much fun. I loved that there’s so many different povs and we get a mix of everyone’s stories. Including the side characters. I loved that there was more going on with their lives and we got to learn more about them. The overall character growth with everyone was amazing. This series quickly claimed a Roman Empire spot for me and I will never shut up about it❤️🔥 ["

Natasha StriegelCured my book 2 hangover!
"This book cured my Book 2 hangover from this series. I am SO glad I fought through the lull and kept reading. Enter Roman?!?! Holy cow. Talk about a heart throb. My favorite part about this book is how invested you get in every character. Multiple storylines can easily become confusing and sloppy, but this book is a masterpiece in getting you invested in each character and their relationships/development. I’m itching to start book 4 asap. ["
