A.J.A truly exquisite end to an exceptional series
"I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of Archangel’s Eternity and am still in awe after two full reads, a re-read of the entire series and a final re-read of my favorite passages in the book. Full disclosure: Nalini Singh is one of my must-read authors and this series is at the very top of my list of favorites. You know the kind I'm talking about: a series you will read every single year, sometimes more than once a year, because it's truly exceptional, in a way that isn't limited to a single book or even several, but instead spans the entirety of a series. Archangel’s Eternity was no exception. It simply added to the perfection of this series in myriad ways. Reading this particular book was a mix of joy and sorrow. Joy because I was back in the world of Raphael and Elena, in a world populated by angels, vampires and Guild Hunters. Sorrow because this time, I was saying goodbye to a world I’ve spent almost two decades inhabiting. As a series ender, Archangel’s Eternity was unlike any I’d ever read before. At its core, it is a tribute to love, in all its various forms, between lovers, between friends, between a parent and their child and vice versa. Love radiates from the pages as we visit Raphael and Elena one thousand years into their love story. If you had told me when I started this series with Angels’ Blood that seventeen years and seventeen books later, I would be reading the end to that love story set a thousand years in the future, I would never have believed it. It’s a massive and incredibly bold undertaking for an author to leap one’s readers so far into the future (700 years with the last book, then another 300 in this one) that the majority of the human characters they’ve met, known and loved along the way, are long gone from the earth. I cannot even really describe the extraordinary achievement here. The book feels timeless in a way that is not easily explained. I don’t want to give anything away, but the storylines surrounding who sleeps and who wakes are some of the most hauntingly beautiful passages I’ve ever read, and some of the most romantic as well. I cannot count the number of times I teared up, just from the love that literally saturates the pages, between all the various characters as they wander through eternity. Ultimately, the Guild-Hunter series is an amazing achievement, and this final installment, its crowning glory. Exquisitely, hauntingly beautiful, Archangel’s Eternity left me with a sense of wonder at the many, varied ways we are blessed by our capacity for love. I will miss Raphael and Elena and the world they inhabit, though I will continue to revisit them often. 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended. "Great way to conclude the series. Spoilers** So many heartfelt moments as we circle back to all of the characters I love in this world. Quite a few crying moments — when Caliane had to go back to sleep crushed me, the reunion with the Legion and the unbridled joy of everyone around them with their baby news. After two decades of following these characters, for me this final installment felt like both a farewell and a celebration. While not as action-packed or suspense-driven as earlier books, the story carried immense emotional weight. It read almost like an extended epilogue—wrapping up long-running arcs, honoring the past, and opening the door to the future. I loved every moment of it. We witness the birth of a new generation, the awakening of those who had slept, the remembrance of beloved figures lost, the ever-complicated Cadre politics, and the inevitable madness that touches every immortal life. As the eighteenth and final book, it delivered a deeply satisfying ending. Saying goodbye to Elena and Raphael was bittersweet, but their hard-earned happiness felt well deserved. "I bought Nalini Singh's first Guild Hunter novel, "Angels' Blood", in June 2010. After living with these characters for almost 16 years I was a little heartbroken that this would be the last book in the series. But ... If you're a Guild Hunter fan, "Archangel's Eternity" is exactly the book you want to read and the ending this series deserves. Singh's love for her characters is on every page. It is NOT a glurge-filled, phoned-in, wrap up of everyone left standing after a millennium. This book is the closing chapter to Raphael's and Elena's first thousand plus years and it's so satisfying that I'm content to leave them here. Nalini Singh deftly weaves old and new information into her narrative. Golden nuggets of memory bring characters, current and long lost, into focus again. Throughout its 77 chapters, readers get what they want, plus what they didn't think to ask for. The skill with which Elena's relationship to her mother (already dead in the first book) and her father (dead for hundreds of years) is changed and resolved stands as testament to the authors's heart and hand. "Archangel's Eternity" magnificently ends a series that I'll read again and again. Make sure to read the Author's Note as it is an important part of this book and helps explain my incredibly high tissue count. I can't imagine how raw the author's emotions were while writing this one and some of that came thru on the page. My sincere condolences to Nalini Singh.
